Code of Conduct

These rules are absolute and concern each child’s safety and welfare. Breaking any of these rules is considered a MAJOR OFFENSE at Pearson Road Elementary, and will result in the immediate intervention of a staff member or supervisor.

Pearson Road Elementary Students SHALL NOT:

Fight anywhere on school property.
Bring to school or use on school property:  cigarettes (or any tobacco product), matches, lighters, drugs, alcohol or weapons of any sort.
Threaten other people or use profane, abusive language or offensive gestures.
Chew gum or eat snack foods within the school building other than during lunchtime or on special occasions.
Destroy, damage or deface school property or the property of others.
Hit (with or without something else), rough-house (pushing, tripping, shoving, playfighting, kicking) or physically abuse (pinch, spit, bite, scratch, pull hair).
Throw objects (snowballs, ice, sand, rocks, gravel) on the playground or in the school.

Attendance, Absenteeism and Tardiness
Expected Behavior:
Pupils are to begin lining up at their classroom doors when the warning bell sounds.
Pupils are to be in their seats within the five minutes given between the warning bell and the final bell.
Pupils are to bring a note after an absence if the parent has not already notified the school of the absence by telephone.
Reason for Expected Behavior:
Pupils who are habitually tardy show disrespect for the teacher and classmates by delaying the beginning of instruction.
Punctuality assists both parents and the school in maintaining a secure environment for students.
Punctuality is a good habit to develop in preparation for the future world of work.
Consequences for Misbehavior:
The teacher will record instances of tardiness. If a pupil persists in arriving late for class, the teacher will inform the parent or guardian by letter or telephone.
If a pupil returns from an absence without a note and there was no notification from the parent or guardian prior to the absence, the teacher will remind the pupil to obtain a note. If this is not complied with, the teacher will telephone the parent or guardian.
Honesty
Expected Behavior:
At Pearson Road Elementary you are to be honest in your relations with students and staff. Lying, stealing and cheating are forms of dishonesty and as such are unacceptable behaviors. You are to submit work that is original and represents your own best efforts.
Reason for Expected Behavior:
You will benefit from your relations with others only by being open and honest in what you say and do. Dishonesty in your words, actions or written work has a negative effect on your reputation and the reputation of your school.
Consequences for Misbehavior:
Pearson Road Elementary students must realize that proof of dishonesty carries very serious consequences. Parents will be notified and a Discipline Notice will be sent home.
Stealing:  restitution will be made at the student’s expense.
Cheating:  the test or assignment will be redone. The assigned grading of the work in question will be at the discretion of the teacher.
Lying:  a meeting will be arranged with you, your parents and your teacher to discuss the situation.
Designated Areas
Expected Behavior:
You may be in the following areas during non-instructional time only if you have a pass from a teacher or supervisor:
computer lab
classrooms
library
hallway
During the following times the hallway washrooms for Pod B may be used for washroom purposes:
before school
noon hour
recess
after school
Gymnasium and equipment rooms are off limits to all students unless under the direct supervision of a teacher.
Change rooms are to be used before and after Physical Education classes, before and after house games, and before and after extra curricular events, which require gym strip. Change room doors will be locked at other times for security reasons.
Students using the library must respect it as a classroom where teachers and students are working. When direct instruction is in progress, students are expected to work quietly on individual projects.
Reason for Expected Behavior:
These guidelines are necessary for your own protection and for the proper security of special areas and equipment necessary for instructional programs. Consideration for others is necessary in the classrooms, library, computer lab, gym, hallways and other areas of the building.
Consequences for Misbehavior:
You will be reminded of the rule and your name will be entered into the behavior record keeping system .  After one infraction you will be reported to your classroom teacher and you may have restricted privileges in designated areas.
Should students disturb instruction in the library, passes will be confiscated and the disruptive behaviors recorded on a Discipline Notice. The classroom teacher will issue an appropriate consequence and inform the teacher-librarian.

You should respect all school property, including:
exterior of the building
washrooms
hallways

textbooks
desks
library resources
supplies
Your desk and the floor area around it are to be kept neat and tidy.
When sitting down in class you should make sure that all four legs of your chair are always on the floor. Tables and desks are there for you to complete your work on, not for sitting, writing on, carving on or dismantling.
Gym equipment is designated for use in physical education classes only. Outdoor equipment is to be signed out according to the Pod regulations or the regulations set up by your classroom teacher.
No gum is allowed at any time on school property during school days.
Reason for Expected Behavior:
In taking care of school property you display pride in your school. You also help to maintain the attractive surroundings and useful facilities that are needed for the learning successes of you and your fellow students.
Consequences for Misbehavior:
If you damage school property, you will be expected to clean or pay for repair or replacement. If a textbook or library item is destroyed, lost or stolen, you or your parents will be expected to pay the replacement cost.  Intentional damage is a crime and will be dealt with by proper authorities.
Respect for Others
Expected Behavior:
You are to treat all people with consideration, courtesy and respect both physically and verbally.
Everyone on the school property, including administrators, teachers, certified educational assistants, office staff, noon-hour supervisors, custodians, visiting teachers, guests and parents, is deserving of students’ respect. Defiance to adults will not be tolerated.
Being rude, back talking, or interrupting adults or peers is unacceptable.  Teasing, bothering, threatening others or starting rumors about your peers is not acceptable.
Fighting, pushing, shoving, tripping, kicking, biting, spitting, slapping, play-fighting and rough horse-play are not acceptable student behaviors.
Reason for Expected Behavior:
Every person needs a good self-image and has the right to be treated with respect. Getting along with others is a very important skill in making your way in the world. It is an adult responsibility to lead and nurture children. It is the student’s responsibility to respond in a positive manner. In addition, mean words and rough behaviors may hurt someone’s feelings or injure them physically.
Consequences for Misbehavior:
Disrespect or inappropriate behavior will result in an immediate, supervised time-out, and a written account of the incident will be completed (either by an adult or by the student or both) and kept on file. A  Discipline Notice, giving an account of the incident, will be sent home.   Repetitive offenses will result in a conference involving parents and the school.
Personal Appearance
Expected Behavior:
Students will be expected to wear their school uniform.  The uniform must be clean, fit properly and look presentable for school.  On days when the school uniform is not required, students are expected to still dress in a clean, neat and respectable manner. Clothing with offensive words or pictures, rude sayings or slogans as well as any clothing that promotes alcohol, tobacco or drugs must not be worn. Summer wear, such as halter-tops and muscle half-shirts, must not be worn. Hats may not be worn in the building.
Students should dress appropriately for the weather with the intermediate students acting as role models for the younger students. Coats and outside footwear are to be removed and neatly stored in the cloakroom or locker before entering classrooms. Students are required to have clean inside footwear that is suitable for the classroom and the gym. Gym strip is required for students in grades 4, 5 and 6.

All students shall remain on school property during the school day, unless special permission has been secured. The Administrative Officers or school staff authorized by the Administrative Officers may permit students to leave during the lunch hour. When students are permitted to leave during lunch hour, they are expected to conduct themselves in accordance with the Code of Conduct. Any conduct that adversely impacts on the welfare of other students or the learning atmosphere of the school may be subject to discipline.
2:30 PM
Students not involved in a teacher-supervised, extra-curricular activity must go directly home or  to their bus line up.
Bus students are to wait quietly by the flag pole for their bus.

Students who ride bicycles to and from school must dismount and push their bicycles when on the school grounds, in the parking area or in the bike cage.

Student Movement (continued)
Reason for Expected Behavior:
These guidelines are important to maintain security and order and  to ensure that all students are safely supervised during the school day. Each person in the school community has the right not to be disturbed by unnecessary noise.
Consequences for Misbehavior:
Students will be reminded of  the expected behavior. If the offense is serious or repetitive, the student’s name will be entered in the Discipline Record Keeping system, and appropriate action will be taken.
Appropriate Language
Expected Behavior:
Your language will be such that it shows respect for staff and students. Name calling, swearing, crude, rude and obscene language in any form (spoken, written, implied or gestured) is unacceptable.
Reason for Expected Behavior:
Being able to use appropriate and tasteful language is a valuable life skill. When language is offensive to others, hurt feelings may lead to further conflict.
Consequences for Misbehavior:
First offense:  student will write an account  of  the incident with a copy given to the classroom teacher.
Second offense:  student will write an account of the incident and parents will be notified with a Discipline Notice.
Further offenses will result in a conference (parent, student and teacher) intended to produce an action plan (administrators may also attend).
Academic Success
Expected Behavior:
In order to ensure success in your school year, you are to complete all class and homework assignments to the best of your ability.
Reason for Expected Behavior:
Effort  and determination are keys to success. If you do not put forth your best effort and take pride in your work, it will not be acceptable.
Consequences for Misbehavior:
Students may be required to do unfinished work during activity time.
If your effort on homework is unacceptable, you will complete it or redo it, possibly after class time. If you fail to complete homework, the teacher will phone home the first time homework is not complete and discuss the situation with your parents. If homework is not completed a second time, a contract will be set up to include the student, parent and teacher. If the contract is not successful in improving your completion of homework assignments, administration will be consulted and further action will be discussed.
Extracurricular Activities
Expected Behavior:
Students participating in our extracurricular programs will behave with exemplary sportsmanship and good manners in all situations.
Reason for Expected Behavior:
There are two reasons for the stated expectation. First, as  a participant in an extracurricular program you have made a commitment to the school and its programs. Secondly, you are a representative of  our entire school.  The impression created by student behavior in such a setting reflects on all involved with the school. We are very proud of our school and expect its representatives to respect their role.
Consequences for Misbehavior:
Misbehavior of participants in our extracurricular programs will have a negative effect on the school and its reputation. Students who misbehave will no longer be allowed to participate in the extracurricular activity.
Misbehavior will result in a Discipline Notice being sent home to parents. Loss of eligibility to participate will result from any additional infractions. Should the first instance be of  a severe nature, eligibility may be withdrawn at that time.
Tobacco, Alcohol and Drugs
Expected Behavior:
Students are not to be involved in using or distributing any tobacco or alcohol product at any time in the school or on the school grounds. Students are not to be in possession of any drugs. Medically prescribed drugs are to be kept locked in the school’s medicine cabinet.  Students are not to have any medication on them, in their desks, lockers, nor in their backpacks.   Any medication brought to school is to be recorded and reported on the proper medical forms and then stored in the medicine cabinet.  All medication is to be administered under the direct supervision of staff.
Reason for Expected Behavior:
Our school should be a safe, secure and productive place in which the best efforts of the entire community are encouraged.
Consequences for Misbehavior:
Students who contravene this section of the Code will be subject to immediate suspension from school by the Principal. This suspension could be definite or indefinite in duration depending on the circumstances. Misbehavior related to drugs or alcohol may also be referred to the R.C.M.P. if, in the opinion of the Principal, a Provincial or Federal law has been violated.
Weapons
Expected Behavior:
Students will not bring any item that is classified as a weapon to school. In addition, students will not use any material in a way that creates a weapon.
Reason for Expected Behavior:
The school must be a safe, secure environment for all.
Consequences for Misbehavior:
The possession of a weapon will result in a suspension from school for an appropriate period. Repeated offenses will result in an indefinite suspension from school and a referral to the R.C.M.P.
School Bus Conduct
Expected Behavior:
You are to comply with all posted School Bus Rules and  any directions provided by the Bus Driver.
Reason for Expected Behavior:
The School Bus is to be considered an extension of the school. Student safety is the paramount concern on the School Bus. Appropriate behavior and attentiveness are essential to ensure the safety of children while being transported to and from the school by bus.
Consequences for Misbehavior:
Students who do not comply with the behavioral expectations will first be warned about the need to reform their actions and comply with the rules. Repeated misbehavior will result in a suspension of riding privileges for an appropriate period. Transportation then becomes the responsibility of the parent.

School Neighbours
Expected Behavior:
Students are expected to conduct themselves as responsible members of our school neighborhood.
Reason for Expected Behavior:
Students must be courteous to the families living in the school neighborhood and respectful of their property. Students who engage in conduct that disturbs, disrupts or damages the persons or property of the school neighborhood may be subject to discipline.
Consequences for Misbehavior:
Misbehavior has a negative effect on our students and school. Misbehavior will result in a Discipline Notice being sent home to parents. Should the behavior become repetitive, further action may be taken.

Travelling to and from School
Expected Behavior:
Students are expected to conduct themselves in accordance with the Code of Conduct of the school while travelling to and from school. Students who contravene the Code of Conduct while travelling to and from school in circumstances that adversely impact on the welfare of other students or the learning atmosphere of the school may be subject to discipline.
Reason for Expected Behavior:
Students are recognized as members of our school community and our school is a member of the general neighborhood. Behavior outside the school grounds that is in accordance with our Code of Conduct reflects good citizenship in our community.
Consequences for Misbehavior:
Students will be reminded of the expected behavior. If the offense is serious or repetitive, the student’s name will be entered in the Discipline Record Keeping system, and appropriate action will be taken.
